Aniline and Its Derivatives Used in the Dye Industry: Preliminary Evaluation of Plant Visits.

Visits were made to four different facilities as part of a project to develop an occupational hazard assessment document about aniline (62533) and its derivatives as they are used in the dye industry. The goal of each visit was to become familiar with the operation of the facility and observe potential sources and hazardous exposures and hazard control programs. The facilities used aniline and its derivatives in the manufacture of dyes, pigments, and photo processing chemicals. The dye and pigment industries involved almost exclusively used batch operations and were less highly automated than other aspects of the chemical industry. This report emphasized the need to develop general approaches for control of potential worker exposures to hazardous situations. Recommendations included the need to visit smaller facilities, older facilities, and speciality facilities and to observe import repackaging; to examine additional operations including dry product production and packaging, maintenance, waste disposal and quality control sampling; to examine handling of additional types of materials; and to study further the distribution of air contaminants throughout the workplace.
