The serum levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in workers occupationally exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1746016) (TCDD) and in nonexposed referents. Serum samples were collected during a NIOSH medical survey from 280 workers exposed to TCDD and 99 nonexposed referents. Determination and lipid adjustments of PCDD and PCDF levels were conducted in both study groups. Workers exhibited a significant elevation of serum TCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF, and 1,2,3,4,7,8-HxCDF compared to nonexposed referents. Detectable samples for six furan isomers were found for only 10 to 40% of the samples analyzed. The levels of TCDD in the workers of this study were among the highest concentrations reported in the literature. TCDD levels in nonexposed subjects were consistent with the levels that have been reported for other nonexposed populations.
