Process safety management: resources from the american institute of chemical engineers for use by industrial hygienists.
Am Ind Hyg Assoc J 1992 Jun; 53(6):404-410
Resources available within both the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) which are useful to industrial hygienists in general and specifically of use to those working in chemical processing industries (CPIs) were described. Among the resources was a series of guidelines that represents the combined knowledge of experts in chemical process safety. Also available were numerous meetings and workshops for exchanging information and courses for developing a working knowledge of important concepts in process safety, health, and loss control. Industrial hygienists can use these resources to understand and help manage process safety hazards. Many of these tools can apply more generally to the industrial hygienist's goal of controlling health and safety hazards. In light of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's recently enacted rule on Process Safety Management of Hazardous Chemicals, these resources may be particularly important at the moment.
