Evaluation of chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and ventilatory function among workers exposed to 2,3,7,8- tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.

Workers participating in a NIOSH cross sectional study of exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (1746016) (TCDD) were evaluated for chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ventilatory function, and thorax and lung abnormalities by physical examination. The study examined 490 workers at a New Jersey facility employed from 1951 to 1969 in the production of sodium-2,4,5-trichlorophenol (NaTCP), 2,4,5- trichlorophenoxyacetic-ester, and other chemicals and 96 workers at a Missouri facility which produced NaTCP, 2,4,5-T-ester, or hexachlorophene. NaTCP and 2,4,5-T-ester were produced for 4 months in 1968 and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol and hexachlorophene from April 1970 to January 1972. Factory area neighbors were matched with workers and formed the referent group. Standardized interviews and medical examinations were conducted to determine demographic information, medical and occupational history, and lifestyle information. Spirometry and blood tests were also performed. Potential exposure related cases of chronic bronchitis and COPD were identified. Workers had a significantly higher mean lipid adjusted and half time extracted serum TCDD level than the referents. The latter had a significantly higher lifetime alcohol consumption. Analysis revealed no association between exposure to TCDD contaminated substances and chronic bronchitis, COPD, ventilatory function, or thorax and lung abnormalities.
