The reasons and rationale behind a move toward improved quality control in the conduction of epidemiologic studies were presented as an introduction to a series of reports dealing with various aspects of this field of interest. The need for quality assurance and quality control in manufacturing was seen as representative of the need for quality assurance and control in epidemiological studies. Data access and data sharing were discussed. Views on formalization of good epidemiological practices and comments on some of the problems these guidelines may present to the epidemiologist were presented.
