The Study on the Relationship between Breath Dust Value (BDV) and Pneumoconiosis.

The relationship between the breath dust value (BDV) and the severity of pneumoconiosis was examined. The BDV was a parameter that expressed cumulative dust exposure in terms of inhaled air volume and work intensity. The BDV was computed by multiplying the volume of air inhaled, as measured for a specific job having a specific labor intensity, by the average dust exposure for the job times the length of exposure. The BDVs were computed for 706 workers exposed to silica (14808607) dust at two unspecified factories in the People's Republic of China. Attempts were made to correlate the BDVs with the number and severity of the cases of pneumoconiosis diagnosed among the workers at the two facilities over a 20 year period. Sixty nine cases of pneumoconiosis occurred among the workers during the evaluation period. The incidence rates of pneumoconiosis increased linearly with the natural logarithm of the BDV. The severity of the cases increased with increasing BDV. An analysis of the data obtained at one facility revealed that seven cases of pneumoconiosis were classified as being stage-0 to stage-1, 12 as stage-1, ten as stage-2, and 13 as stage-3. The corresponding average BDVs were 846.09, 1890.32, 8185.50, and 15636.48, respectively. A mathematical model was developed from the data to predict the maximum dust exposure that produces no cases of pneumoconiosis. The estimated maximum dust exposure was 0.76mg/m3.
