Joint European investigations of new generations of dust sampling instrument.

In an effort to set more meaningful standards and in turn bring about substantial reductions in airborne contamination from dust particles, there was observed to be a need for further improvement in dust sampling instrumentation. This review presented some of the recent progress that has been made in this area. Equipment made by the French, Italian, British, German and Belgian manufacturers was compared. In general, dedicated samplers were noted to be easier and more convenient to use. Some of the ones intended for respirable (or alveolar) dust were also observed to provide, with some additional effort, a reasonable measure of total dust. The spectrometer type devices required more skill on the part of the operator but provided the greater versatility needed in some of the expected research applications. While no single instrument emerged as the universal best, it was clear that certain instruments were not appropriate for certain tasks. The researchers recommend that, in designing new studies to further understanding of the health related properties of airborne dust in mines, sampling instrumentation should be chosen after careful consideration of these comparison studies.
