Abstract
A brief review was provided of the development of the field of occupational safety and health in the United States. The tasks which NIOSH was mandated to carry out were briefly defined and its activities in the areas of hazard identification, hazard evaluation, control systems, and dissemination of information were described. The organization of the Institute was delineated with explanations of activities given for each of its various divisions. Efforts were described in the following areas of concern: surveillance, health hazard evaluation, occupational lung diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, occupational cancers, severe occupational traumatic injuries, cardiovascular diseases, disorders of reproduction, neurotoxic disorders, noise induced hearing loss, dermatological conditions, and psychological disorders. A list of articles and publications appearing during fiscal year 1986 generated as a result of NIOSH activity in the field was provided.
