The association between acrylonitrile (107131) exposure and excess incidences of lung and colon cancer were discussed. Physical and chemical properties of acrylonitrile and production use are summarized. NIOSH estimates that approximately 125,000 workers are potentially exposed to acrylonitrile. Epidemiologic and experimental studies found that occupational exposure to acrylonitrile may be associated with an excess of lung and colon cancer. Acute toxicity studies in laboratory animals indicated that inhalation of acrylonitrile caused damage to the central nervous system, lung, liver, and kidneys. When administered to pregnant mice, acrylonitrile was embryotoxic. Plans for the identification of a suitable worker population for possible epidemiologic studies are mentioned. NIOSH is currently conducting an evaluation of control technology in the plastics and resin industry (including acrylonitrile processes) and is developing a criteria document for acrylonitrile and other nitriles. The author recommends that acrylonitrile be treated in the workplace as a human carcinogen. Interim recommended industrial hygiene practices developed by NIOSH to help reduce occupational exposure to acrylonitrile are appended.
