Permeation through five commercially available glove materials by two pentachlorophenol formulations.

A study of permeation of five commercially available glove materials by pentachlorophenol (87865) (PCP) formulations was conducted. The study was undertaken because of the widespread use of PCP as a wood preservative and the finding of PCP and its metabolites in the urine of wood treatment workers. Glove materials tested included 0.19 millimeter (mm) vinyl exam glove, 1.64mm natural rubber, 0.41mm playtex (latex/neoprene flock lined), 0.64mm nitrile rubber, and 1.08mm polyvinyl-chloride (PVC). These were tested for penetration by 4.3 percent PCP in diesel-oil and 4.2 percent sodium- pentachlorophenate (131522) (NaPCP) in aqueous sodium-hydroxide, pH 11. Breakthrough times were recorded. Breakthrough times of the materials against 4.3 percent PCP in diesel oil were: vinyl exam rubber more than 480min, and PVC more than 960min. Corresponding breakthrough times against 4.2 percent NaPCP in aqueous sodium- hydroxide were more than 300, 0.5, more than 450, more than 930, and more than 930min, respectively. The authors conclude that different glove materials show different resistances to penetration by PCP, depending on the composition of the material and the PCP formulation used. Nitrile rubber and PVC materials give the greatest protection of the materials tested against both PCP formulations.
