A walk through survey was conducted at Calhio Chemicals, Incorporated (SIC-2879), Perry, Ohio in August, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the captan (133062) production process and to evaluate the potential for exposure to 1,3- butadiene (106990). Bulk samples of captan and tetrahydrophthalimide (85405) (THPI), a 1,3-butadiene derived intermediate, were analyzed for residual 1,3-butadiene. Captan was produced by synthesizing perchloromethylmercaptan and THPI. Engineering controls consisted of single mechanical seals on all 1,3- butadiene pumps and a closed feedback loop system at the tank farm unloading station, atmospheric vents, relief valves and rupture disks on reactors, and local exhaust ventilation at process sampling points. Company industrial hygiene monitoring data showed all 1,3- butadiene exposures to be below 2 parts per million. No residual 1,3-butadiene was detected in bulk samples of captan and THPI. The company maintained accurate personnel records on all current and terminated employees. The authors conclude that an in depth survey should be conducted at the facility. Full shift monitoring of jobs having potential 1,3-butadiene exposure should be continued.
