A walkthrough survey was conducted at Davis and Geck, American Cyanamid Company (SIC-3842), Danbury, Connecticut in December, 1982. The purpose of the survey was to determine the feasibility of including the facility in a NIOSH mortality/industrial hygiene study of ethylene-oxide (75218). Industrial hygiene monitoring and personnel records were reviewed. The facility manufactured surgical sutures, hand scrub sponges, skin staplers, serum sample tubes, and burn dressings. Some of the sutures were sterilized with ethylene- oxide. The other products were sterilized with cobalt-60 gamma radiation by an outside contractor. The facility employed approximately 600 hourly employees. Review of the personnel records indicated that the facility could contribute at least 21,240 person/years to the NIOSH study. Company industrial hygiene monitoring data back to 1977 existed. Ethylene-oxide exposures in 1983 ranged from less than 0.1 to 1.3 parts per million, personal time weighted averages. The authors conclude that the facility meets all the eligibility criteria for the survey (having at least 400 person/years of exposure, adequate personnel records, and no serious confounding exposure to a known leukemogens) and should be included in the survey. Recommendations include continuing industrial hygiene ethylene-oxide monitoring and conducting ventilation system investigations.
