In-depth survey report: control technology for the ceramics industry, Didier Taylor Refractories Corporation, Newtown, Ohio.

An in depth control technology survey was conducted at the Didier Taylor Refractories Corporation (SIC-3255), Newtown, Ohio in July 1982. Area and breathing zone samples were analyzed for free silica (14808607), respirable and total dust, hexavalent-chromium (18540299) and elemental chromium (7440473). The effectiveness of the engineering controls was evaluated. Work practices were observed. The facility used local and general exhaust ventilation, local exhaust duct work, filter dust collectors and blowers, and integral exhaust hoods on the baggers to control exposures. Air concentrations of free silica, respirable and total dust, and hexavalent and elemental chromium were below the relevant federal standards; chromium concentrations were below the detection limit. Good work practices were achieved by a program that combined housekeeping, incentive awards, and a labor/management committee. NIOSH approved respirators and other personal protective equipment were available and use was mandatory. Recommendations include monitoring the airflow of recirculated air in the local ventilation system for contamination and establishing a program to ensure proper selection, fitting, and maintenance of respirators.
