Employee exposure to various airborne contaminants, particularly coal-tar-pitch volatiles (CPTV) during roofing operations involving asphalt and coal-tar-pitch (61789604) was investigated. The study was requested by a representative of the United States, Tile, and Composition Roofers, Damp and Waterproof Workers Association following worker complaints of eye and skin irritation. It was conducted on September 5, 1975 with a followup on September 18. The job site was a roofing operations (SIC-1761) in Lenexa, Kansas, run jointly by four Kansas City roofing companies. Personal air samples were used to evaluate employee exposures, and medical histories and examinations were undertaken. There was no particular evidence from the environmental or medical results to indicate that fibrous glass or asphalt made an important contribution to the acute skin and eye problems sustained by the roofers. All environmental results were less than 40 percent of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists recommended threshold limit values of 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) for asphalt and 10mg/m3 for fibrous glass. Based on these results, no definitive statements could be made concerning the presence of carcinogens or cocarcinogens in the work atmosphere or their effect on the workers.
