Industrial hygiene survey of the Stauffer Chemical Company, Lemoyne Plant, Axis, Alabama.

Worker exposures to carbon-disulfide (75150) and carbon- tetrachloride (56235) were determined at the Stauffer Chemical Company (SIC-2869), Lemoyne Facility, in Axis, Alabama, on January 9 to 12, 1978. The survey was part of a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational carbon-disulfide exposure. Approximately 50 of the workers at the facility were assigned to the carbon-disulfide and carbon-tetrachloride production areas surveyed. The company maintained a safety and industrial hygiene program. Medical services were provided by a consulting physician and one full time registered nurse. With one exception, time weighted average (TWA) exposures of first and second class operators of the carbon- disulfide and carbon-tetrachloride units to carbon-disulfide were relatively low, ranging from none detected to 0.99 parts per million (ppm). The one exception was a high TWA exposure of 83ppm measured in the breathing zone of one operator, but was considered an atypical exposure situation. Carbon-disulfide TWA exposures for loading workers ranged from 5.5 to 31.2ppm, compared with the OSHA standard of 20ppm for continuous eight hour exposures. TWA average exposures of first and second class operators to carbon- tetrachloride averaged 0.43ppm and 1.8ppm, respectively, although individual eight hour exposures were as high as 7.5ppm for the first class operator, and as high as 9.5ppm for the second class operator. These compare with the OSHA standard of 10ppm for continuous eight hour exposures. Loading workers' TWA exposures to carbon- tetrachloride ranged from 10.4 to 16.6ppm. The author recommends a thorough investigation of the one case of high carbon-disulfide exposure of the one second class unit operator, modification of loading workers sampling procedures, and the use of appropriate respiratory protective equipment by the loading workers.
