Summary of Discussion Workshop on Evaluation of Inhalation Exposure to Mineral Dusts, Cincinnati, Ohio, October 10, 1962.

Results of a workshop on the evaluation of mineral dust exposure are summarized. Approaches to dust sampling, and the relative importance of precision, speed and convenience in air sampling are discussed. Optical methods, X-ray diffraction, and differential solubility chemical techniques for the analysis of the chemical and physical properties of mineral dusts are reviewed. The authors conclude there are still unresolved areas, such as the significance of particles above 0.1 micron versus those below 0.1 micron, the role of thermal effect and Brownian motion, and the relative influence of terminal velocity versus size.
