ASTM Studies of Filter Test Methods.

The development and present status of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F-21.20 Gas Filtration Subcommittee test methods for determining filter media fluid flow characteristics are summarized. Factors influencing the development and special features of the draft standard test methods are discussed. The preliminary procedure for determining clean media efficiency, which utilizes a solid, monodisperse aerosol as a challenge test agent and a single channel, forward light scattering optical particle counter for detection, is described. Factors which must be considered when applying F-21.20 filter media test methods to air purifying respiratory protection equipment are discussed.
