The role of respirators in protecting workers from exposure to toxic substances and carcinogens is discussed. Work situations in which the use of respirators is permitted are identified. OSHA regulations with respect to respiratory protection in selected industries are described. The costs of a comprehensive respiratory protection program are discussed. Information on respirators and respirator use which should be available to wearers is identified. Principles which are necessary to assure workers of reliable and dependable respiratory equipment, including more frequent respiratory equipment, including more frequent respirator inspection and testing, limited duration of respirator approvals, and uniform user instructions provided by manufacturers, are discussed.
