The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored the NIOSH International Respiratory Research Workshop, held in Morgantown, West Virginia, on September 9 through 11, 1980. The principal goals of the workshop were to review new approaches to respiratory protection; to identify new research priorities; to investigate future cooperation and collaboration in respiratory protection research; and to move toward international standardization of respiratory performance requirements. Participants from 12 countries presented 32 papers on topics which included future areas of respirator research; air purifying respirator research; atmosphere supplying respirator research; research related to the physiology and psychology of respirator use; and research related to quantitative respirator fit. Workshop participants were in general agreement on the need for better respirator user programs, improvements in respirator design and performance, and the development of international respiratory protection criteria.
