Benzyl chloride survey report at Tenneco Chemicals, Inc., Fords, New Jersey.
Cincinnati, OH: U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, IWS 60-14, 1976 Nov; :1-14
A survey was conducted at Tenneco Chemicals, Inc. (SIC-2819) in Fords, New Jersey on October 8, 1976 to determine if a more detailed industrial hygiene survey to quantify worker exposure to benzyl- chloride (100447) was justified. The facility employed 200 workers of which 154 were operating and maintenance workers. Preemployment and exit physicals were required of all employees and a complete blood test was performed every quarter. A physician and full time nurse were employed on site and the facility had a formalized safety program. The drumming of benzyl-chloride conducted at this facility involved only one worker and one supervisor. Worker and environmental air sampling during drumming detected no significant amounts of benzyl-chloride. The author concludes that, due to low employee exposure, there is no need for a more detailed study of this facility.
