Assessing Safety In Fossil Fuel Electric Power Generating Plants.
NIOSH 1978 Sep:194 pages
The safety record of central electric power generating facilities utilizing fossil fuels as a primary energy source was evaluated. Records of 30 recent incidents which occurred during normal operation and maintenance and involving a safety problem were analyzed to determine their extent and magnitude. The commonality of occurrences and cause was also interpreted. The number of fatalities and injuries were minimal but property losses were high. There was no common cause or agent associated with incidents which involved fatalities or hospitalization. The author concludes that improved fire protection, loss prevention, life and personnel safety programs would significantly reduce the impact of safety related incidents.
