A simple rapid quantitative method for determination of trimellitic- anhydride (552307) (TMA) was developed. TMA was esterified with boron-trifluoride-methanol and quantitated by gas chromatography. Twenty-one TMA standards analyzed by this method indicated a pooled relative standard deviation of 7.6 percent. The average recovery of TMA from 15 filters spiked in the 19.2 to 96 microgram range was 104.2 percent. The authors conclude that this new method, which can be performed in a single test tube, may be used for other organic anhydrides besides TMA.
