Survey for N-Nitroso Compounds at American Cyanamid Co., Bound Brook, New Jersey.
NIOSH 1978 Jun:11-11
Worker exposures to N-nitroso compounds were determined at American Cyanamid Company (SIC-2865) in Bound Brook, New Jersey on February 23 and 24, 1978. The survey was conducted to determine whether N- nitroso compounds are contaminated in azo (1314132) dye stations where sodium-nitrite (7632000) and secondary or tertiary amines are used for dye synthesis. No thermal energy analyzer (TEA) responsive compounds were found in bulk samples or air samples near the coupling tub. Compounds responsive to TEA were found near all diazotization tubs at concentrations from 276 to 846 nanograms per cubic meter. The authors suggest that the final and absolute confirmation of the N-nitroso material should be accomplished by the isolation and structural identification with mass spectroscopy. They note that another air sampling should be performed to confirm the findings.
