A survey of methods and instrumentation for the analysis of benzene in the workplace air.

The findings of a comprehensive survey of methods and instruments used for the analysis of benzene (71432) are presented. Information on benzene toxicity, exposure standards, and production and use is reviewed. Data is summarized on the applications, operating principles, and sensitivity of remote, on site, continuous, and personal samplers, analytical procedures for collected samples, and portable survey instruments. Different types of sampling and analytical equipment are also described, including various types of pumps, combustible gas analyzers, total hydrocarbon analyzers, ultraviolet photometers, infrared filter photometers, nondispersive infrared photometers, and gas chromatography systems. Also reviewed are recent gas chromatographic improvements and developments in optical and chemical subtractive methods, calibration methods and equipment, and applications of strip chart recorders, digital devices, and alarm or control devices.
