Abstract
The development and applicability of testing and certification regulations for protective equipment are discussed. The establishment of the NIOSH Testing and Certification Laboratory in 1972 is described along with its organization, functions, and responsibilities. The use of American National Standards Institute guidelines as interim requirements for protective equipment is reviewed, and NIOSH efforts toward development of permanent, more comprehensive standards are discussed. Also described are procedures involved in the certification process. The relative roles of various Federal agencies in worker protection are considered.
