Industrial hygiene report walk through survey of toluene at General Adhesives and Chemical Company, Nashville, Tennessee, report no. IWS-103-20.
NIOSH 1979 Feb; :1-34
Worker exposures to toluene (108883) were determined at the General Adhesives and Chemical Company (SIC-2891) in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 17, 1979. The company was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational toluene exposure. Approximately 83 of the employees were assigned to the production areas surveyed. The company had no formal industrial hygiene program although it did maintain a formal safety program. Medical services were furnished by a consulting physician. Personnel records were available for current employees and terminated employees back to 1972. Toluene concentrations measured by charcoal and Draeger tubes ranged from 1 to 34 parts per million (ppm). Total hydrocarbons ranged from 28 to over 400ppm. All measurements were below the threshold limit value. The authors conclude that a determination regarding this facility's suitability for inclusion in the epidemiological study will be made at a later date.
