Industrial Hygiene Report In-Depth Survey, Solvent Vapor Survey of Screen Printing Operations at Prints Charming, Ltd., 34-01 38th Avenue, Long Island City, New York.
Worker exposures to industrial solvents were determined at Prints Charming, Limited (SIC-2751) in Long Island City, New York, on December 12 and 13, 1978. About 35 of the employees at the facility are assigned to the production area surveyed. Air samples were analyzed for toluene (108883), xylene (1330207), methyl-isobutyl- ketone (108101), ethyl-acetate (141786), butyl-acetate (123864), cyclohexanone (108941), 1,3,5-trimethyl-benzene (108678), 1,2,3- trimethyl-benzene (526738), and 1,2,4-trimethyl-benzene (95636). All solvent concentrations were within the respective OSHA standards of 100, 100, 100, 400, 150, 50, 25, 25, and 25 parts per million. The author recommends use of solvent resistant gloves, proper storage of inks and solvents, hygienic housekeeping practices, judicial use of solvents, proper use and maintenance of respirators, prohibition of eating or smoking in or near working areas, and worker education in the hazards and safe use of solvents.
