NIOSH 1972 Oct:7 pages
Air sampling for silica (7631869) dust was conducted at the International Mineral and Chemical Company in Kona, North Carolina, at the North Carolina Granite Corporation (SIC-3281) in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, and at Piedmont Minerals in Hillsboro, North Carolina during the week of October 23, 1972. Dust concentrations in the far end of the Ball Mill ranged from 4.09 to 5.09 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). Samples collected in the middle of the Ball Mill area ranged from 2.78 to 2.81mg/m3. Overall dust concentrations in the Ball Mill area were 1.04 to 1.30mg/m3. In the Ball Mill and Bag Fill area concentrations were 2.36 to 2.8mg/m3. In the cone crushing and gut screen areas, silica dust concentrations were 1.75 to 2.3mg/m3 and 4.03 to 4.52mg/m3, respectively. In the remaining areas of the facility, all samples contained less than 0.6mg/m3 in silica dust.
