An information profile on impact noise is presented. Impact noise is defined, and maximum exposure duration is specified. The occurrence of impact noise is discussed and the number of persons occupationally exposed is estimated. Economic trends in impact noise are analyzed. The biologic effects of exposure to impact noise are reviewed and human and animal studies are cited. The Department of Labor Standard for impact noise and the ACGIH threshold limit value are listed. Data and measurement problems associated with the enforcement of impact noise standards are discussed.
