Preliminary findings on the benzidine (92875) based dyes Direct- Black-38 (1937377), Direct-Blue-6 (2602462), and Direct Brown 95 (10300740) are presented. The results of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) short term animal feeding study, NIOSH field studies, and other pertinent research are reviewed. Implications for occupational health and guidelines for minimizing employee exposure to the three dyes are discussed. NIOSH recommends that the three dyes be handled as human carcinogens.
