Exposures to isopropyl alcohol (67630) and xylene (1330207) used in a staining solution for treatment of pap smear and sputum specimen slides were evaluated on May 9, 1979 at the request of an employer representative of Pathologist Laboratory Consultation Service, Denver, Colorado. General room samples were taken directly underneath and in close proximity to the staining solution. The chemicals were collected in organic vapor charcoal sampling tubes and analyzed by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Results of the analysis show that all breathing zone samples were below OSHA standards (980 and 435 milligrams per cubic meter of air, respectively, for isopropyl alcohol and xylene). The continuing use of laboratory hoods when tissue slides are in use, and employee education on the toxicity of isopropyl alcohol and xylene are recommended.
