Safety information profile: warehousing operations (including loading and unloading).
NIOSH 1979 Apr; :1-41
A safety information profile is presented for the warehouse operations industry (Standard Industrial Classification 422). Loading and unloading operations and three types of warehouses are described. Safety and health hazards are discussed, including strained muscles and toxic exposure to chemicals. Injury and illness statistics are tabulated, and limited exposure level data and three related studies are cited. Industry trends are described and current federal standards are outlined. Names and addresses of industry associations and other interested parties are provided. It is concluded that the manual handling of materials is a major hazard of this industry. Production standards are seen as intensifying this problem, and existing federal standards are judged to be inadequate. The comprehensive training of personnel in good work practices, use of mechanical equipment whenever possible, and medical evaluation of employee physical abilities are recommended. Additional research is suggested.
