A safety information profile is presented for the food and kindred products manufacturing industry (Standard Industrial Classification 20). Four major processes are described: raw materials handling and storage, extraction, processing, and preservation. Potential safety hazards are discussed, along with chemical, physical, and biological health hazards. Current hazard controls are explained. Accident and illness statistics are presented. Exposure level to noise is mentioned, and related studies are cited. Industry growth trends and new technology are reviewed and existing federal standards are outlined. A list of names and addresses of industry associations and other interested parties is provided. It is concluded that injury and illness rates in this industry are high despite extensive federal and consensus standards, and manual material handling may be the primary cause. Further study to investigate accident cause and prevention is recommended.
