Abstract
Gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry (GC/MS) and its application to industrial hygiene analytical problems are discussed. The GC/MS technique has provided information suitable for qualitative or quantitative analyses for industrial hygiene samples and has become an integral part of most laboratories where only trace amounts of samples are available for obtaining analytical information. Two GC/MS/Data Systems utilizing samples encountered during the health hazard evaluation efforts of NIOSH were discussed. A high resolution double focusing magnetic sector instrument was used solely to support the methods development research. A sophisticated quadrupole unit was used to provide analytical services for industrial hygiene samples. It was found that careful sampling and preparative procedures were necessary to produce optimum results and useful information.
