Abstract
A survey was conducted at Chevrolet Gear and Axle Factory, (SIC- 3714) Detroit, Michigan, to determine the extent of worker exposure to N-nitroso compounds in the machine shop environment where cutting fluid is used. Four bulk and three diluted fluids were sampled and subjected to HPLC/TEA (66400) analysis. Acetone (67641) and hexane (110543) at a 1 to 1 ratio were used as the elution solvent at a flow rate of 2 ml/min N-nitroso-diethanolamine (1116547) (NDE1A) was found in one sample of an ultrasonic testing fluid. An unidentified, TEA responsive peak with a retention time 1.09 times longer than the NDE1A peak was observed in four samples. It was suggested that this unknown substance might have been formed during machine operations, and that it might not present a hazard to machine shop workers.
