Abstract
To assess the chronic toxicity and carcinogenic potential of dioxane (123911) in mice, four grades of this compound were applied topically to the skin: 1) high purity grade dioxane; 2) sales grade dioxane with high peroxides; 3) dioxane with high impurities; and 4) sales grade dioxane. Ethyl-alcohol (64175) served as the control material. A preliminary 4 week study was conducted to determine the minimum lethal dose (MLD). Each of the four experimental groups and the control group comprised 30 mice. Each material was applied 3 times weekly in doses of 0.05ml for 78 weeks. Gross examination of the mice indicated no toxic effects and no tumors in any of the five groups tested, and incidence of hepatic and pulmonary neoplasms observed histologically in the treated mice was within the normal limits.
