Analytical methodology (No. S57) for determining levels of hydroxyquinone (123319) in aerosols collected on cellulose ester filters is described. An outline of principles of the methodology, demonstrated sensitivity and range of concentrations detectable, interference from other compounds, precision and accuracy of the method, advantages and disadvantages of the method and apparatus and reagents needed are presented. Stepwise procedures are given for recovering samples, chemical analysis of their content, preparation and calibration of standards, and calculations giving final concentrations of hydroquinone in the air. A second section outlines practical considerations in sampling methodology. A backup data section summarizes experimental studies validating the methodology and describes various chromatographic systems used, stabilization systems for samples, effects of storage on sample values, percentage recovery of spiked samples, collection efficiency, and methods for independently verifying hydroquinone concentrations generated by apparatus.
