Urinary metabolites from controlled exposures of humans to trichloroethylene.

The urinary metabolites of trichloroethylene (79016) (TCE), trichloroethanol (115208), and trichloroacetic-acid (76039), were measured after humans had been exposed for controlled periods of time to either 20, 100 or 200ppm of TCE vapor for 5 days per week. The quantity and concentration of each metabolite varied widely during the daily exposures of identical magnitudes. If the excretion of either of these metabolites, or their sum, is to be considered as a measure of exposure, it must be remembered that at the current TLV, and at higher exposures, both the concentration and quantity are affected by previous recent exposures. At the lowest level of exposure studied the effect was lessened, indicating a better clearance of the metabolites on a daily basis. It is the conclusion that the measurement of urinary metabolites is not an ideal method of predicting the magnitude of a human exposure to the vapors of TCE, particularly if the exposure was near or greater than the current TLV.
