NIOSH Sampling Data Sheet Nitroethane S219 (Set 4).
NIOSH 1978 Jan:10 pages
Nitroethane (79243) is collected by drawing a known volume of air through a series of tubes containing XAD-2 resin. A front adsorbing tube and a backup tube comprise the sampling train and prevent sample migration during storage. The XAD-2 in the tubes is transferred to vials. The nitroethane is then desorbed with ethyl- acetate (141786). An aliquot of this solution is then injected into a gas-chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector. The area of the resulting peak is then compared with standards. Validation was accomplished for the range 147.4 to 604mg/cubic meter at 22 degrees C and an atmospheric pressure of 777mm Hg (7439976) using a 3 liter sample volume. The adsorptive capacity of the XAD-2 resin determines the upper limit of the range of the method. This capacity is effected by the concentrations of nitroethane and other substances. The concentration obtained at the OSHA standard level was 2.2 percent lower than the true concentration. This may represent a random sampling error rather than a sampling bias. The sampling device is small and portable and needs no liquids but sample sizes must be small. The precision of the method is affected by the reproducibility of the pressure drop across the tubes.
