A step by step procedure for the collection and analysis of ethyl- chloride gas (75003) from air is described. Ethyl-chloride is trapped by drawing a known volume of air through a large charcoal (16291966) tube. The sampling train consisted of a front adsorbing tube and a backup tube. The charcoal in each tube is transferred to a serum vial and sealed with a septum and a lacquered aluminum (7429905) seal. Carbon-disulfide (75150) is used to desorb the ethyl-chloride gas which is then analyzed by gas-chromatography. The area of the resulting peak is then calculated and compared with areas found using standards. This method has been validated over the range of 1586 to 6500mg/cubic meter at 24.5 degrees C and atmospheric-pressure of 770.8mm Hg (7439976) using a 3 liter sampling volume. Much smaller amounts can be measured using this method if the desorption efficiency is adequate. Desorption efficiency must be determined over the range used. The upper range limit of this method depends on the adsorptive capacity of the charcoal tube. It is also dependent on the concentrations of ethyl- chloride and other substances in the air. Average concentrations obtained at OSHA standard level are 1.4 percent lower than the true concentrations. These variations may be random rather than representative of a sampling bias. The sampling device is small and portable but sample size is limited. The precision of the method is limited by the reproducibility of the pressure-drop across the tubes.
