Cincinnati, OH: U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, TA 77-64, 1977 Sep; :1-3
A Hazard Evaluation and Technical Assistance survey was conducted by NIOSH on August 5, 1977, at the Jefferson County Road and Bridge Department, Golden, Colorado. The survey was prompted by a request from the management regarding personnel complaints about exhaust fumes with accompanying headache throughout the garage (SIC-7525) and offices of the 30,000 square feet facility. Environmental sampling revealed that the level carbon-monoxide (630080) throughout the shift ranged from 5-75ppm, with average concentrations of 15ppm. Employees reported symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon- monoxide. The overhead exhaust system was found to be inoperative. Based on these findings it was determined that a potential health hazard exists and that unless the exhaust system is repaired a toxic condition could readily occur when cold weather forces all garage doors to be closed.
