A Health Hazard Evaluation investigation was conducted by NIOSH on July 6-7, 1977, at the biological treatment facility of the Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel (SIC-3325), Follansbee, West Virginia. The survey was prompted by a request from an authorized employee representative regarding worker exposures to odorous emissions. Environmental sampling failed to identify any airborne toxic substances or concentrations of microorganisms that could be considered a potential health hazard or even capable of producing the alleged symptoms of sore throat, burning eyes, and nausea. Recommendations are made to assist in ensuring worker safety and health.
