Industrial Hygiene Survey, Tenneco Chemicals, Inc. Intermediates Division Reading, Pennsylvania.
An industrial hygiene survey was conducted at the Intermediates Division, Tenneco Chemicals, Inc., (SIC-2865) Reading, Pennsylvania, on March 29, 1973, and was concerned primarily with the receipt and handling of benzidine (92875) prior to reaction. A detailed description is given of the storage, handling, opening, stirring, emptying, decontamination, and disposal of drums containing benzidine-sulfate (531862). Details are given on pilot plant operations, past benzidine handling procedures, industrial hygiene measures, medical surveillance, and employees with potential contact with benzidine. Recommendations are given for reducing exposure to benzidine and expanded medical surveillance. Recommendations include: isolation of benzidine handling areas, required use of respirators and full face and head covers during handling procedures, better handling of protective garments and equipment, environmental sampling, urinalysis and urinary cytology monitoring of exposed workers and former workers, and the replacement of benzidine as an intermediate.
