Criteria for a recommended standard... occupational exposure to cadmium.

The NIOSH standard on exposure to cadmium (7440439) in the workplace is presented. The standard is designed to protect the health and safety of workers up to a 10 hour workday, 40 hour week, over a working lifetime. A time-weighted average (TWA) exposure concentration of 40 micrograms of cadmium per cubic meter of air for a 10 hour working day (200 micrograms per cubic meter for any 15- minute sampling period) is recommended. Sections deal with biological effects of exposure; environmental data; development of a standard; work practices; and compatibility with other standards. Specific topics under various sections include extent of exposure, historical reports, effects on humans, epidemiologic studies, animal toxicity, correlation of exposure and effect, environmental concentrations, air sampling, chemical analysis, engineering control, basis for previous standards, and basis for the recommended environmental standard. Appendices are entitled air sampling method, environmental analysis, determination of protein in urine, material safety data sheet, and research needs. (Contract No. 099- 72-0087)
