Abstract
The need for protective equipment inferred from currently available accident data is outlined, along with the types of tests that would be required to evaluate whether protective equipment meets these needs, and the test equipment necessary to conduct these tests in an occupational safety research laboratory. Users of existing safety equipment were interviewed to determine the need for improved equipment for eye, face, hand, head and foot protection, and new standards. The need for improved protective devices and standards, currently available equipment to test protective devices against standards, and the need for new test equipment were discussed with several research laboratories involved in such testing.
