Improved Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction Determination of Respirable Free Silica.

An X-ray diffraction procedure is described for analysis of respirable free silicon-dioxide (7631869), or alpha-quartz, in sand, limestone and granite rock. The analysis is performed directly on collected samples. The method provides a minimum detectable limit of 2.2 micrograms quartz. The data demonstrate that matrix effects are insignificant in the critical range for respirable silica measurements, and that an internal standard is not necessary.
