Dysbarism-related osteonecrosis: proceedings of a symposium on dysbaric osteonecrosis. Beckman EL, Elliott DH, eds. Cincinnati, OH: U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, DHEW (NIOSH) Publication No. 75-153, 1974 Jan; :9-15
A sample survey of a small number of commercial divers yields a high incidence of dysbaric osteonecrosis. A number of the lesions are located in the juxta-articular regions of the bones. The shoulders are the most common site of involvement. Tomography is useful in addition to X-ray techniques in diagnosis. A case history is presented in which the patient describes his work experience, symptoms, treatment, and precautions now being employed in the prevention of bone necrosis in divers.
