The metabolism of normal bone is reviewed in order to assist understanding the metabolic events related to dysbaric osteonecrosis. The metabolic activities which occur during bone synthesis and resorption are presented. The possibility of using the presence of bone breakdown products in the urine as diagnostic indicators of dysbaric osteonecrosis is discussed.
