This review of silicosis includes a brief history of the disease, the geological occurrence of silica (7631869), the principal industrial sources of free silica, the characterization of exposure, and the pathogenesis of silicosis. Chronic, accelerated and diffuse tissue reactions are differentiated and the symptoms of each are described. The clinical features, and diagnosis using historical and radiographic evidence are discussed. The various effects of silicosis on lung function are described. There is no specific treatment for silicosis and current therapy is directed entirely at complications. Ventilation, the use of wet techniques, and respirators are described as prevention measures.
