Abstract
Presentation of the nationwide autopsy program developed for underground coal miners by the Public Health Service, including the development of the protocol, criteria selection, dissemination and implementation. The program serves basically in helping the surviving relatives to establish eligibility for "black lung" compensation. The importance of the program as the first national occupational necropsy study is discussed with the relationship of the program to more in-depth research.
